Beta Thalassemia
The differential diagnosis of beta thalassemia may include alpha thalassemia, iron deficiency anemia and hemolytic anemia.
Beta thalassemia can be detected by full blood count, hgb electrophoresis and blood smear.
There are two forms of beta thalassemia which include beta thal minor an beta thal major.
Beta thal major is common in asian, middle eastern or mediterranean.The patient may present with severe microcytic anemia for the firsts year of life with hepatosplenomegaly.
There will be homozygous for beta thal.
Beta thal minor is common in asian, african, middle eastern and mediterranean. There will be heterozygous for beta thal. The common symptoms and signs is mild microcytic hypochromic anemia with no response to iron therapy.
The common complications of beta thalassemia are recurrent infection, thinning of cortical bone and poor growth.
The treatment of beta thalassemia may include blood transfusion, deferoxamine nightly infusion chelation therapy and stem cell transplantation.
