The steps to prepare pre operative patient with respiratory problem may include to control infection, consider bronchodilator therapy such as salbutamol, loss of weigh if obese, cessation of smoking, physiotherapy and drainage of plural effusion which need to be done pre operatively.
The common investigations for patient with respiratory disease may include full blood count to identify any case of polycythemia, infection, urea and electrolytes, arterial blood gasses to differentiate type 1 and type 2 Respiratory failure, peak flow test, urine dipstick test, ECG ( to rule of right ventricular hypertrophy that present with tall QRS complexes in V1 and V2), chest x ray and ventilation and perfusion scan.
The post operative management of patient with respiratory problem may include physiotherapy, deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis, optimise analgesia and mobilisation.
