Diabetic neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is part of sensory neuropathy which is associated with diabetes mellitus. The duration and control of diabetes will affect the severity of diabetic neuropathy.
The common complications of diabetic neuropathy are charcot joints and neuropathic ulcer. Patient may present with reduced knee reflex and reduced ankle reflex. There will be loss of sensation mostly loss of vibration sensation in stocking and glove distribution. There will be callus or ulcers on the pressure areas. Patient may present with stamping or wide based gait. Patient may also present with weakness and wasting of the proximal muscles ( amyotrophy diabetic neuropathy). Nocturnal pain is common in the feet and the leg.
