Surgery Definition – What is paralytic ileus?
Paralytic ileus is a non obstructive massive dilation of the small bowel. Paralytic ileus may appear silent and painless and mostly occur post operatively. Gastrogaffin study is performed along with plain film to distinguish mechanical or functional bowel obstruction. The management may include admission of the patient, nil by mouth, intravenous drip to correct any electrolytes disturbance, nasogastric tube to decompress the bowel and prevent aspiration, urinary catheter, oxygen and opioids. Surgery is not needed and recovery is expected in 4 – 5 days.
