Surgery Definition – What is flail chest?
Flail chest occurs due to multiple fractures of the rib which lead to the part of the chest wall to move paradoxically inwards especially during inspiration as a result of loss of continuity with the bony chest wall. Flail chest may present with decreased entry of air on ipsilateral side, crepitus on palpitation of affected area, tachycardia, paradoxical movement of the chest wall and tachypnea.
