Pharmacology definition - Donepezil
Donepezil
Donepezil is a type of medication which is useful in treating patient with Alzheimer’s disease. Donepezil will slow the progression of the disease up to 6 months.
Donepezil will inhibit acetylcholinesterase reversibly in the synaptic enzyme. The inhibition of the acetylcholinesterase will prevent the degradation of acetylcholine into acetate and choline. There will be an increase in the level of acetylcholine in the synaptic junction. This condition will increase the rates of stimulation of the muscarinic receptors and nicotinic receptors.
Donepezil carries its own side effects. Donepezil appears to cause hepatotoxicity and may also cause nausea. It is advisable for the patient currently on treatment with donepezil to undergo liver function test to monitor the status of the liver enzyme.
