Pediatric Definition - Diabetes Mellitus Type 1
Diabetes Mellitus Type 1
Patient with typ 1 diabetes mellitus may present with severe ketonemia, acidosis and ketonuria as well as glucosuria. Patient may also present with dry tongue.
There will be poluria, nocturnal enuresis, intense hunger, loss of weight, polydipsia and malaise.
Every 3 months the HbA1c need to be measured. Besides that yearly routine TSH should be identified as well as level of lipids or cholesterol.
The insulin and c peptide also need to be masured. Ketone and blood glucose should be monitored.
The treatment of diabetes mellitus type 1 should be focus on diet. Patient need to adhere to strict diet plan, avoid overtreatment of low sugars and considers less extras snack.
Exercise is required. Insulin treatment may be divided into rapid acting regular lispro, intermediate acting NPH and basal long acting insulin.
Eduation for entire family is a requirement.
The common complication of diabetes mellitus type 1include kidney failure and blindness.
Good outcome may be reached wtih good blood pressure control.
The differential diangosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus include type 2 diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus.
