PROSTATITIS, ACUTE
1. Avoid alcohol and spicy foods.
2. Do not massage the prostate.
3. Warm sitz baths ½ hour qid.
4. Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) 500 mg bid × 4–6 weeks.
5. Alternatively, may use other antibiotics for 4–6 weeks: Administer metronidazole (Flagyl) 500 mg bid to avoid Clostridia difficile.
6. For severely ill patients and those not responding to above treatment, consult an urologist.
7. In young men, treat for possible gonorrhea.
