The treatment of esophageal variceal bleeding may include administration of somatostatin or vasopressin. Beta blocker may reduce the portal hypertension and bleeding. Others may include Minnesota Sengstaken tube in case of massive bleeding. Endoscopic banding or endoscopic sclerotherapy, in cases of recurrent and refractory bleeding esophageal transection and anastomosis and shunts with the aims to shunt the portal blood to the caval system. The common examples include transjugular intrahepatic porto systemic shunts and or TIPSS and distal splenorenal caval shunt or Warren shunt. However, Shunting may carry the risk of encephalopathy as a result of the toxin being shunted despite being metabolized by the hepatic system.
