DENTAL INFECTIONS
1. Consult a dentist as soon as possible.
2. Penicillin VK (Pen-Vee K, etc.): 250–500 mg qid. For children
give 40–50 mg/kg/day, in divided doses if patient not allergic to
penicillin.
3. Alternatively, give clindamycin 150–300 mg qid. If duration of
treatment more than 4 days, add metronidazole (Flagyl) 500 mg tid
to prevent pseudomembranous colitis.
4. Ibuprofen (Motrin): 600 mg q6hrs PRN for pain or
hydrocodone/acetaminophen (Vicodin) 1 tab q4hrs PRN for pain.
