Pharmacology definition - Atypical Anti Psychotic Agent

Atypical anti psychotic agent
Atypical anti psychotic agent is different from typical anti psychotic agent because atypical anti psychotic agent produce less anti cholinergic and extrapyramidal side effects than typical anti psychotic agent. Atypical anti psychotic agent may produce less effects on blocking the alpha adrenergic receptor, cholinergic receptor and H1 histamine receptor.
Atypical anti psychotic agent such as risperidone, clozapine and olanzapine ( more useful in treating anxiety disorder, depression and obsessive compulsive disorders) are useful in treating both the negative and positive symptoms of schizophrenia.
Atypical anti psychotic agent may block the dopamine receptor and 5HT2/ serotonin receptor in the limbic system of the brain. This will lead to decrease in the post synaptic response to serotonin and dopamine excitation.
The common side effects may include parkinsonism type of symptoms, gain in weight and hypotension. Specifically, patient who is currently under clozapine should require frequent monitoring of the white blood count due to the side effect such as agranulocytosis and leucopenia.
