Symptom Finder - Treatment of Tension Headache
HEADACHE, TENSION
Acute:
1. Ibuprofen (Motrin): 600–800 mg q8hrs. PRN. Other NSAIDs may be tried
2. Acetaminophen (Tylenol): 325–1,000 mg q4hrs PRN.
3. Acetaminophen + butabarbital + caffeine (Fioricet): 1–2 tabs q4hrs, PRN.
4. If these measures are unsuccessful consult a neurologist.
Prophylaxis:
1. Amitriptyline (Elavil): 50–150 mg h.s.
2. Trazodone (Desyrel): 50–150 mg h.s.
3. Trigger point injections with 1–2% lidocaine (Xylocaine): 2–3 cc.
4. Occipital nerve blocks with 2–3 cc of 1–2% lidocaine (Xylocaine).
5. Cervical collar to wear at night, latched in front.
6. Cervical traction over-the-door beginning with 7 lb for one-half hour twice a day and increasing gradually to 15 lb for 1 hour twice a day.
7. Refer to psychiatrist for evaluation and psychometric testing.
