Surgery Definition – What is pseudo obstruction?
Pseudo obstruction is a massive non obstructive dilation of the colon. Pseudo obstruction may present with large bowel obstruction but with reduction in the bowel sound and reduction in colonic motility. A single contrast gastrograffin enema is considered to rule out any mechanical obstruction. Pseudo obstruction is managed by removal of precipitating factor. Surgery (resection or tube cecostomy) is only performed if the decompression fail.
