The complications of stomas include prolapse which may require re fashioning, excoriation of the skin, hernia, leakage due to ill fitting device, maintenance problems, overflow of the afferent bowel contents into efferent limb, compromise of the distal anastomosis, megaloblastic anemia due to ileostomy as a result of terminal ileal loss,aroma / malodour, short gut syndrome ( excessive loss of electrolytes and fluid), gall bladder stones and kidney stones due to loss in the terminal ileum or absorption of the bile salt and dehydration.
