Differential Diagnosis of Amnesia
Amnesia
Amnesia can be divided into acute cases of amnesia and chronic cases of amnesia.
The differential diagnosis of acute (transient) amnesia / causes of acute amnesia may include :
-migraine
-traumatic head injury
-temporal lobe epilepsy
-transient ischemic attack
-tumors
The differential diagnosis of chronic (persistent) amnesia / causes of chronic amnesia may include :
-bilateral posterior cerebral artery occlusion
-bilateral medial temporal lobe lesions
-tumor of the midline in the region of the third ventricle
-herpes simplex encephalitis infection
-sarcoidosis
-limbic encephalitis
-thiamine deficiency
-Korsakoff’s psychosis in alcoholism
-cognitive defect
