Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is also known as Stein - Leventhal Syndrome. Polycystic ovarian syndrome may occur due to increase in LH secretion which lead to excessive production of androgens. Increase production of androgen may lead to hyperplasia of the theca cells, multiple present of the follicular cysts and annovulation.
Patient with polycystic ovarian syndrome may present with symptoms and signs such as infertility, obesity, virilism and hirsutism.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome may present with multiple cyst on the ovaries with enlarged ovaries and thickened pearly white ovarian capsule.Histological studies may reveal cyst with cortical stromal fibrosis and layer of granulosa cell with luteinized theca cells.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is associated with Cushing syndrome, androgen secreting adrenal tumors, obesity and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
There will be an increase in LH, testosterone and decrease in FSH.
The common complication of polycystic ovarian syndrome are endometrial carcinoma and breast carcinoma.
