Omeprazole is a type of proton pump inhibitor. Omeprazole is useful in forming part of the regimen in treating Helicobacter pylori infection. Besides that omeprazole is useful in treating patient with gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, esophagitis and Zollinger - Ellison syndrome.
Omeprazole will inhibits the H+/ K+ ATPase pump by binding to it and suppress the secretion of gastric acids. H+/K+ ATPase pump typically present on the parietal cells of the gastric mucosa.
Omeprazole carries its own side effects such as the possibility of developing gastric carcinoid tumors due to prolonged exposure to omeprazole.
