Strokes
Strokes may present and affect the right side or left side .
Right side stroke may occur due to hemorrhage or infarction which occur as a result of lesion on the left sided of the cerebrum. Patient generally may present with facial droop or contracture on affected sides. There will be an increase in tone on the affected sides with reduction in power on the affected side. The reflex will be hyper reflex on the affected side. Patient may present with sensory inattention. Patient may also present with homonymous hemianopia and dysphasia.
Broca’ area and Wernicke ‘s area may be affected and the patient may suffer from expressive aphasia and receptive aphasia.
Left sided strokes may occur due to the lesion of the right cerebral hemisphere as a result of infarction and hemorrhage. Patient may present with facial droop and contractures on the affected sides. Left sided stroke may present with neglect or apraxia. Besides that , patient may present with reduced power on the affected side, increase tone on the affected side and hyper reflexia on the affected side. Patient may present left homonymous contracture. Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area are preserved ( expressive and receptive aphasia will not present).
