What is depression ? Depression is a state of unhappiness which interferes with pleasure. There will be change in behavior. Anger, irritable mood, loss of interest in any activities, deterioration in work / school quality. There will also be change in sleeping and eating pattern. Suicidal thought is common.
Depression is identified by using the Children’s Depressive Rating Scale or teen scale.
The treatment may include cognitive behavior therapy and close monitoring for any suicidal intention. Antidepressant is also considered.
Differential diagnosis of depression may include dysthymic disorder, hypothyroidism, conduct disorder, ADHD, substance abuse and eating disorder.
