Surgery Definition – What is Barrett’s esophagus?
Barrett’s esophagus is a metaplastic changes of the distal part of the mucosa of the esophagus secondary to the irritation by the acidic content of the stomach for a prolonged period of time. In this case, the normal squamous epithelium lining the esophagus undergoes changes into columnar epithelium which resembles the gastro mucosa. Barrett’s esophagus is associated as a pre malignant condition with an increase risk of developing esophageal carcinoma such as esophageal adenocarcinoma.
