EPISTAXIS
1. Pinch the anterior nares together and hold 5–10 minutes (at Kiesselbach area).
2. Cauterize area with silver nitrate sticks or electrocautery.
3. If bleeding persists, pack anterior nasal compartment with oxidized cellulose (Surgicel) or absorbable gelatin foam (Gelfoam).
4. If bleeding continues or posterior bleeding is suspected, consult ENT specialist.
5. Order PT and PTT and administer vitamin K (Aqua-Mephyton) if these studies are abnormal.
6. Look for asthma, emphysema, hypertension, and CHF and treat.
