PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE
1. Absolutely must stop smoking. If necessary prescribe nicotine patches, nicotine gum, or varenicline (Chantix).
2. Aspirin: 81–325 mg daily. If unable to tolerate aspirin prescribe clopidogrel (Plavix) 75 mg daily.
3. Cilostazol (Pletal): 100 mg bid one-half hour before meals.
4. Metoprolol: 25–100 mg bid, but monitor blood pressure.
5. Atorvastatin (Lipitor): 10–80 mg daily to control lipids but may halt the progression of atherosclerosis regardless of the cholesterol level.
6. Consult vascular surgeon for consideration of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty or arterial bypass surgery if symptoms and objective findings indicate severe arterial insufficiency.
