Surgery Definition – What is the anatomy of the esophagus?
Esophagus is a tube which is muscular in characteristic that extend from the cricoid cartilage (C6) to the gastro esophageal junction (T10). The esophagus is 25 cm in length and lined with stratified squamous epithelium The upper 1/3 of the muscle is striated in nature, the middle 1/3 is striated and smooth muscle and the lower 1/3 is a smooth muscle. All the muscles are arranged as longitudinal outer layer and inner circular layer. There are 3 points which are considered the lowest points in the esophagus which include cricopharyngeal sphincter, at the point of aortic arch and when the esophagus crosses the diaphragm.
