Asbestosis
Patient with asbestosis may complain of shortness of breath ( dyspnea) and cough productive in nature. Asbestosis mostly occur due to inhalation of the asbestos. It is one of the most common occupational disorders. There is a decrease in the total lung capacity.
Pathologically, there will be asbestos bodies or yellow brown rod, diffuse fibrosis of the interstitium and plaque collagenous in nature detected in the diaphragm and the pleural. Fibro elastic response may occur due to action of macrophages that engulf asbestos fiber.
CT scan may reveal the present of pleural plaques and the interstitial fibrosis.
The common complication of asbestosis is the development of malignant melanoma and bronchogenic carcinoma.
