Surgery Definition – What is achalasia?
Achalasia affects both male and female within the age of 30s to 60s worldwide. Achalasia is caused by the failure of the lower esophageal sphincter to relax. Patient with achalasia may present with dysphagia for solid and liquid. The barium swallow may reveal the bird beak appearance at the distal of the esophagus and no gastric bubble. There will be a raise in the pressure detected by the manometry. The treatment of achalasia may include Heller’s cardiomyotomy and balloon dilation.
