Pathology definition - Coarctation of Aorta
Coarctation of aorta
Coarctation of aorta may present with symptoms and signs such as hypertension in upper extremities, harsh systolic murmur and weak femoral pulses. The complication of coarctation of aorta is left ventricular hypertrophy and in infant heart failure may occur. Coarctation of aorta is associated with atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, bicuspid aortic valve and aortic stenosis as well as mitral regurgitation and berry aneurysm.
Coarctation of aorta may affect both adult and infant. In infant coarctation of aorta is associated with narrowing of the aorta which is proximal to the ductus arteriosus. In adult coarctation of aorta may occur as a result of narrowing of the aorta which is distal to the ductus arteriosus. There will be a formation of collateral circulation which is presented with notching
Coarctation of aorta is commonly affecting men and patient who suffer from Turner syndrome. The treatment of coarctation of aorta include surgical treatment.
