Pathology definition - Atrial Septal Defect
Atrial septal defect
Atrial septal defect is part of the non cyanotic congenital heart disease. Patient typically present with systolic ejection murmur and wide fixed split second heart sound. There is a strong association between atrial septal defect ( septum primum)with Down syndrome,
rubella syndrome and trisomies.
Atrial septal defect occurs due to communication between left and right atria because of the defect of the atrial septum. There is an evidence of left to right shunt as a result of lower resistance of the pulmonary vasculature. There are three different variants of atrial septal defect which include septum secundum, septum primum and septum venosus. The common complications of atrial septal defect are paradoxic embolism, pulmonary hypertension and cyanosis at the later stage.
Atrial septal defect may require surgery to be treated.
