A spontaneous, irregular, and rapid muscle contraction across a joint. It can be (1) essential (or idiopathic) and (2) secondary. The latter can result from many causes, including trauma, in-born metabolic errors, neurodegenerative disease, medications/toxins, and hypoxic injury. Myoclonus also can be induced by external stimuli, such as auditory or verbal.
