What are the sites to be looked for anaemia?
Anaemia is examined in good natural light, and the sites examined are:
– Lower palpebral conjunctiva—retract the lower eyelids downwards and ask the
patient to look upwards (both eyes at a time) (Fig. 2.8).
– Tongue (especially, the tip and the dorsum).
– Palate (especially, the soft palate).
– Nail-beds (nail-beds are windows of capillary network)—press the base of the
nail to observe blanching and flushing, and compare with your own nail-bed.
– Palms, soles and general skin surface.
NB: Anaemia is seen earliest in soft palate.
