Evaluate quantity and distribution of hair, plus thickness and texture. Since alopecia is often caused by
inflammation of the scalp, look for scaling, redness, crusts, and papules. Note that of the three scaling scalp
lesions (seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and tinea capitis), only tinea is associated with alopecia.
