How can physical exam help in the diagnosis of edema?
The most important finding for the interpretation of edema is the patient’s venous pressure as assessed
through neck veins examination (with distention arguing in favor of right ventricular or biventricular
failure). Edema per se (i.e., without an assessment of central venous pressure) has little correlation with
cardiac disease.
