The telegraphic outline of schematic examination is:
1. Anaemia (remember, jaundice may be looked for haemolytic anaemia).
2. Haemorrhagic manifestations into skin or mucous membrane (petechiae, purpura,
ecchymosis, etc.)
3. Oral cavity (gum bleeding, Waldeyer’s ring in lymphoma, or any ulcer).
4. Lymph nodes all over the body (generalised lypmhadenopathy in lymphoma).
5. Liver and spleen (e.g., hepatomegaly in lymphoma, splenomegaly in thalassaemia,
and absence of hepatosplenomegaly in aplastic anaemia or sickle cell anaemia).
6. Sternal tenderness.
7. Ophthalmoscopy (fundus of eye should be examined for retinal haemorrhage,
papilloedema, etc).
*Read anaemia and lymphadenopathy from the section on ‘General examination’, and examination of liver
and spleen from ‘GI and hepatobiliary system’.
