Management of Chlamydia trachomatis conjunctivitis (trachoma)
Chlamydial conjunctivitis is encountered in three common situations:
• neonatal infection (fi rst 1–2 wks)
• young patient with associated venereal disease
• isolated Aboriginal people with trachoma
Acute infection resembles acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Take swabs for
culture and PCR testing.
Systemic antibiotic treatment:
• Neonates: erythromycin for 3 wks
• Adults and children > 6 kg: azithromycin as single dose
Partner must be treated in cases of STI.
