Amputation is the removal of part of the limb or full limb or any portion of the body. Amputation may include above knee amputation, through knee amputation and below knee amputations of the lower limb.
The common reasons for amputation may include severe case of infection or gangrene which is precipitated by diabetes mellitus or peripheral vascular disease. Amputation may also perform due to severe injury to the limb.
The patient’s mobility and the type of artificial part that will be fitted or known as prosthesis will be considered before the amputation is being performed.
