Medical Dictionary – The definition of Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease is common form of dementia which affect the middle age person. Alzheimer’s disese is presented by impairment of the memory and will affect the language throughout the progression of the disease as well as visuospatial problems, apraxia and loss of judgement with inability to perform basic daily task.
Histopathologically there will be deposition of neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid protein in the brain detected during post mortem.
Familial Alzheimer’s disease occurs due to the mutations in three genes. Patient with this mutation may have an early onset of dementia. The late onset of dementia is associated with mutations in four other genes. The cause of sporadic forms remain unknown.
A development in treatment has been focused on the acetylcholinesterase inhibitors which will slow the progression of the disease.
