Medical Dictionary – The definition of Altitude Sickness
Altitude sickness or mountain sickness occurs due to the unaccustomed exposure to the high alititude which is 4500m or more above the level of the sea. The reduction in the atmospheric pressure and lack of oxygen may trigger hyperventilation or deep rapid breathing which lower the concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood. The symptoms of altitude sickness may include exhaustion, anxiety and nausea. There will be acute shortness of breath due to collection of fluid in the lungs which lead to pulmonary edema. The treatment of altitude sickness may include return to the lower altitude and diuretics treatment.
