Alizarin or alizarin carmine is a dye which is orange red in colored and derived from the coal tar and isolated from the plant madder ( Rubia tinctorum). Alizarin is water insoluble but will dissolve in the alcohol, alkalis and ethers. Alizarin is a useful ph indicator and act as a histochemical reagent or thallium, calcium, zirconium and titanium.
