Achalasia is an abnormality which affect the coordination and contraction of the smooth muscle of the esophagus as well as the incomplete relaxation of the sphincter of the lower esophagus. Achalasia may also lead to difficulty in swallowing.The symptoms of achalasia may include progressive difficulty especially in swallowing liquids and solids. The food may be regurgitated and esophageal spam may lead to the pain in the chest. Achalasia is diagnosed with barium swallow x ray examination or esophageal manometry and endoscopy. The treatment of achalasia may include endoscopic balloon dilation of the lower esophageal sphincter and Heller’s cardiomyotomy which involves the surgical division of the muscle fibers of the lower esophageal sphincter. Injection with botulium toxin may also be considered at the lower esophageal sphincter.
