Medical Dictionary – The definition of Acetylcholine
Acetylcholine is a form of the acetic acid ester of the organic base choline.Acetylcholine is a form of neurotransmitter which is released from the synapses of the parasympathetic nerves or at the neuromuscular junctions. After relaying the nerve impulse, the acetylcholine is later broken down by the enzyme cholinesterase. The action of the acetylcholine at the receptor sites can be blocked by the anti muscarinic drug. The activity of the acetylcholine can be prolonged by the blockage of the cholinesterase by the action of anticholinesterase or acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. The acetylcholine in the form of pharmaceutical preparation ( trade name such as Miphtel and Miochol-E) may be instilled in the anterior chamber of the eye. It will act as a miotic during intra ocular surgery.
