Abdominal thrust is a form of manoeuvre which is useful in treating patient with chocking condition.Abdominal thrust is also known as Heimlich manoeuvre and it involves holding the patient firmly around the midriff which is just under the ribcage.The rescuer's hand need to be held in the form of a fist and short but sharp thrust is applied into the upper abdomen of the patient. The purpose of the abdominal thrust is to dislodge the obstructing object from the airway.However, abdominal thrusts or Heimlich manoeuvre should not be performed in children under the age of one.
