Asafetida
Asafetida is also known as ferula asa faetida which falls under the family of Apiaceae.
It consists of a large branching perennial herb. It will stand up to 3 meters high. Asafetida consists of pale yellow green flowers with thick root.
Asafetida is also known as gum asafetida, asafoetida, giant fennel, food of the god and devil’s dung. Asafetida is commonly found in Afghanistan.
There are may species of ferula. Some may yield oleoresin such as in the case of Tibetan asafetida. Traditionally, it is used in treating neurasthenia and may stimulate the brain. Besides that, asafetida is also useful traditionally to treat convulsion, hysteria, flatulence, constipation, cough, bronchitis and asthma. Animals are repelled by its odor. Generally, asafetida is a common carminative, antispasmodic and expectorant agents.
The extraction process begins by obtaining oleoresin from the incisions into the root and above ground part of the plant. The juice which is milky in nature will leak out and left to be harden and this lead into a dark red lump. This later will be collected. Resin that is obtained will undergoes steam distillation to form the essential oil. Besides essential oil, tincture and resinoid may also be produced.
The asafetida ‘s essential oil may present as a yellow orange oil with strong odor as garlic and bitter acrid taste.
The components of the asafetida include disulphide, free ferulic acid, valeric and vanillin.
The adafetida’s essential oil is used as part of aromatherapy and may be useful in treating bronchitis, asthma and whooping cough. Essential oil also useful for stress and fatigue. Occasionally asafetida is used as fragrance part of the perfume and used in food mainly sauce and condiments.
