Aniseed
Aniseed is also known as Pimpinella anisum which belong to the family of Apiaceae. Aniseed mostly found in Greece and Egypt as well as India and China. Aniseed is also known as Anisum officinalis, A. vulgare, sweet cumin and anise. It is popular in Turkey as “raki” an alcoholic drink made from the seed.
Generally, aniseed is characterized by less than a meter high plant / herb with white flowers and delicate leaves.
Traditionally, in general aniseed is considered as anti spasmodic, anti septic, diuretic, stimulants and carminative agent. Aniseed is consider a treatment for irritable dry cough, bronchitis and whooping cough. The tea from aniseed is useful in treating infant catarrh, colic and flatulence. Besides that aniseed can be useful in treating painful period and to promote production of breast milk.
Essential oil from aniseed is extracted by steam distillation from the seeds. The essential oil is a pale yellow liquid / colorless in certain case with spicy sweet scent. Commonly, the essential oil contains transanethole. Anethole may cause dermatitis, so should be avoided in any cases of skin inflammatory conditions.
Other uses of aniseed may include as a mixture in pharmaceutical industry for cough reliever and also part of the mixture in lozenges. Aniseed may also form as fragrance factors in perfumes, cosmetics, detergents and toothpaste.
