Mention a few terminologies to be decoded in MSK system.
Rheumatologist: An internist or pediatrician with a special interest in rheumatology
who treats musculoskeletal diseases i.e., disorders of the joints, muscles and
ligaments, and systemic autoimmune disorders, commonly referred to as rheumatic
diseases.
Arthralgia: Subjective presence of joint pain only (no inflammation, no swelling).
Arthritis (inflammation of the joint i.e., pain plus swelling of the joint)
– Monoarthritis: Affection of single joint
– Oligoarthritis or pauciarthritis: Affection of 2–4 joints
– Polyarthritis: Involvement of 5 joints.
Soft tissue rheumatism or periarthritis: Involvement of joint capsule and periarticular
structures like ligament, tendon, bursa, fascia, muscle, etc. (i.e., non-articular in
origin); common examples are fibromyalgia, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal
tunnel syndrome.
Enthesitis: Inflammation of enthesis (i.e., the site of ligament, tendon, or articular capsule
insertion into periosteum and bone), which is common in ankylosing spondylitis.
