Surgery Definition – What is insulinoma?
Insulinoma is a solitary tumor of the insulin producing beta cells which present at the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas and insulinoma is the common causes of islets cell tumor. Insulinoma may present with Whipple’s triad such as hypoglycemia, altered in sensation and instability of the vasomotor. The symptoms may be relieved with the administration of glucose. Insulinoma carries a risk of malignancy. The treatment of insulinoma may include excision of localized tumor or distal pancreatectomy in cases where the tumor cannot be localized. Investigations to detect insulinoma may include blood glucose measurement, plasma insulin level measurement, glucagon test, ultrasound scan and CT scan.
