Epistaxis
A simple nosebleed is rarely a problem. Most of these are related to bleeding from Little area in the anterior nasal septum, and packing or
cautery is a simple solution. However, when a patient experiences recurrent attacks of epistaxis, the examination must be more thorough and
extensive.
The physician should check the blood pressure and eye grounds for evidence of hypertension. Check the lungs for asthma or emphysema.
Careful examination of the nasal passages for allergic rhinitis, a granuloma, or neoplasm is important. Perhaps nasopharyngoscopy is
necessary. Look for other sites of bleeding and perform a Rumpel–Leede test. Be sure to question the patient thoroughly about drug use and abuse.
