Surgery Definition – How to treat embolism?
Embolism is treated by considering anti coagulate with infusion of the heparin. Next step clinically or by using arteriogram determine the level of occlusion either it is above knee which is at the superficial femoral artery or below knee. If embolism is above knee consider embolectomy and if it is below knee consider thrombolysis by using streptokinase.
Embelectomy is performed by using Fogarty catheter under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. The catheter has a balloon tip. The tip is passed distal to the clot and the saline is used to inflate the balloon. The catheter is retracted and this pull the clot out.
