Primary brain injury is an initial sustained injury to the brain at time of the incident due to mechanical insult or direct trauma. Secondary brain injury is caused by continuing cerebral tissue’s damage due to causes such as hypotension, hypercarbia and hypoxemia which altered the metabolic environment.
