Surgery Definition – What is diverticulosis?
Diverticulosis is the present of diverticulae in the colon. Diverticulae are small out pouching from the colon’s wall. However, they are not to be considered as a true diverticulae. They are known as pseudo diverticulae where the wall of the diverticulae do not consists of all the layers of the wall of the bowel. The diverticulae are just mucosal out pouching which happens at the sites of the weakness in the wall of the bowel. The site of weakness is considered at the points of entry of blood vessels into the wall of the bowel.
Diveticulosis mostly present at the sigmoid colon.
The out pouching is caused by the increased in the intraluminal pressure which caused by the low fiber diets as the bowel has to work extra hard to push low residue and low bulk stool.
DIverticulosis may be asymptomatic but diverticulosis may also present as vague left iliac fossa or suprapubic pain, flatulence and diarrhea. Diverticulosis may be diagnosed with barium enema where diverticulae can be clearly defined by barium. CT scan is also possible.
Colonoscopy is not considered as diverticulae are difficult to visualize. High fiber diet is the form of treatment in cases of uncomplicated diverticulosis. Surgery is considered as a 1 stage resection of the segment which is affected and re anastomosis of the bowel. Surgery is performed as part of the treatment where the symptoms cannot be relieved with conservative treatment or recurrent flare up of the complication.
The complication of diverticulosis are diverticulitis and diverticular bleed.
