Surgery Definition – What is sigmoid volvulus?
Sigmoid volvulus presents in 75% of volvulus. The etiology of sigmoid volvulus includes abuse of laxatives, high residue diet, bed ridden and pregnancy. Plain film may reveal grossly dilated sigmoid colon which gives a bent inner tube or omega sign. Contrast study may reveal bird beak appearance. The conservative treatment may include sigmoidoscopy or Barium enema. The surgical treatment may include reduction or resection of the bowel with formation of the stoma. Surgical treatment is considered in case of strangulation which develop later.
