How accurate is the closed-eyes sign in diagnosing nonspecific abdominal pain?
Gray et al. studied it in 158 consecutive patients admitted for acute abdominal pain. Eyes were closed in
6/91 patients with true pathology (6.5%) and 22/67 patients with no pathology (33%); 22/28 patients with
closed-eyes were females (p <0.01), usually young. In summary, the predictive power of a positive closed eyes test is 79% and that of a negative test is 65%.
